Our BiMis See the Bigger Picture - Work Shadowing at Ingolstadt Hospital

Hospital life up close: Students in the Bio- and Medical Informatics degree program at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt were accompanied by Professor Ludwig Maximilian Lausser to gain exciting insights into the work of Professor Dierk Vorwerk and his team. They saw state-of-the-art medical technologies in action and gained an even better understanding of the close connection between computer science and medicine.

The introduction to various imaging techniques, which are of central importance in radiology, was awe-inspiring. The students were able to see how digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is used to visualize and treat vascular occlusions and aneurysms. They were also impressed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is used to visualize brain structures and even brain activity, as well as computed tomography (CT), which plays a key role in the rapid diagnosis of strokes. Digital radiography, an indispensable tool in diagnostics, was also presented in detail.

Bio- and medical informatics is a discipline that is becoming increasingly important. It forms the basis for numerous innovations in diagnostics and therapy and combines technological developments with medical practice. For the students, this work shadowing was a valuable opportunity to combine the theory of their studies with the practice of everyday clinical work. It became clear how important it is to always keep the patient and the treating doctors in focus when developing new systems.
