What insights do science fiction films, books, series and comics give us into possible and surprising facets of everyday life in the future? And what valuable insights can be gained from studies on social values and future expectations? The "Motives & Fiction I" project in collaboration with the Foresight Academy is dedicated to these questions in order to reveal exciting overlaps and differences between the science fiction genre and the results of value studies.
Science fiction tells stories that combine visions of the future with new technologies and narratives. These narratives act as a sounding board for thinking about what the future could bring and are therefore a valuable tool for foresight and, for example, design thinking processes. Science fiction films and literature can also influence technological developments and their acceptance in society. Examples such as "Minority Report" (voice assistant similar to Alexa or Siri) and "Star Trek" (communicator similar to a mobile phone) show the role of science fiction as a valuable resource for identifying trends and developing future-oriented strategies.
By integrating science fiction into foresight and design processes, organisations could strengthen their innovative power and make proactive decisions in order to position themselves successfully in a dynamic environment.
