Mini Racing Cars Race through the THI: STEM Racing Stops in Ingolstadt

High tension at the THI: At the Southern Regional Championship of the world's largest school-based STEM racing competition, pupils competed against each other with their self-built mini-racing cars.

Just like in actual Formula 1, the young inventors aged between 11 and 19 had to create business plans, win sponsors, design a team box, present their concepts, and design their vehicles. On the race track, the CO2 cartridge-powered cars proved their speed with spectacular acceleration figures.

A high-calibre jury, including THI employees and members of Schanzer Racing, judged the teams in various disciplines. In addition to the competition, THI offered exciting insights into science and technology with welcoming speeches from THI President Professor Walter Schober and Vice President Professor Hans-Joachim Hof as well as an exclusive tour of the CARISSMA research centre.

Three senior and two junior teams secured their tickets to the German Championship, which will take place at the Audi F1 Project in Neuburg in mid-May. There they will compete for a place in the World Finals, which will be held as part of a real Formula 1 race.

STEM Racing is an international technology competition in which students design and build miniature Formula 1 racing cars and send them into the race. In addition to speed and aerodynamic performance, team performance also counts in areas such as design, sponsorship and presentation. With 26,000 schools in 57 countries, it is the largest school-based STEM programme in the world and is supported by Formula 1. The best teams qualify through several championship levels to the World Finals.
