Laboratories, AI servers and PC pools, customizable learning environments: The digital building, financed with a total budget of 80 million euros from Hightech Agenda Bayern funds, is characterized by state-of-the-art technology and sustainable construction. It will serve as a central location for research and teaching at the university. The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction project took place in spring 2023, with occupancy planned for the 2026 summer semester.

A particular highlight of the digital building is its innovative architecture, which includes a green roof covering around 1,500 square meters. The sustainable concept is rounded off by a photovoltaic system and a green façade, which contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and the visual enhancement of the campus and the city.

Bavaria's Minister of Construction Christian Bernreiter said: ‘The new digital building is a milestone for the further development of the Technical University. It plays a central role in the expansion of the AI hub in Ingolstadt. Despite the after-effects of the coronavirus and the tense market situation in the construction sector, the project has run smoothly so far. I would therefore like to thank all those involved in the construction work, whose commitment has contributed to the success of this complex project to date. Bavaria has a leading position in science and research. With such comprehensive construction projects, we are creating the best conditions to ensure that this remains the case.’

At the topping-out ceremony, Bavaria's Science Minister Markus Blume, who was unable to attend in person, emphasized: ‘We are connecting Bavaria's future node by node: Bavaria's science network continues to grow with THI's digital building! The new building creates the best conditions for AImotion Bavaria: space for innovative research and state-of-the-art teaching and learning concepts - networked, sustainable, and inviting! As a mobility university, the THI ensures the right speed on our roads and in the air. The construction administration and tradespeople are ensuring the right speed during construction and the right infrastructure: the digital building will be a new beacon on the campus. Thank you very much!’

With the digital building, THI is responding to the increasing demand for study places and further expanding its position as a leading AI hub in Bavaria. ‘With the new building, we are creating the best conditions for research and teaching in the field of artificial intelligence,’ emphasizes THI President Schober. ‘We look forward to welcoming students and researchers to the new premises soon.’
The digital building is an important contribution to further strengthening the research and education landscape in Bavaria and a decisive step towards making the university fit for the future.
