Application Requirements

Required documents for the application to the SHIFT Study Sprint RES:

  • CV including listing of education and practical experience
  • Certified copy of Bachelor degree (certificate and list of courses)
  • Copy of passport/ID (all relevant pages)
  • Proof of English skills B2
  • Further documents providing proof of competences

 

All documents must be sent as PDFs indicating kind of document and applicant name, e.g. cv_ali_hassan.pdf

The total volume of documents max not exceed 15 MB. 

 

Application Process

  1. Inform yourself about the program and its requirements
  2. Check with the Germany embassy or consulate on requirements and appointments, if necessary. If required, you will need to apply for a visa. (§ 16b AufenthG - Einzelnorm)
  3. Send documents required for the application (listed above) to studysprint@thi.de. The application period starts on January 15th, 2025, and ends on February 15th, 2025, 11.59 p.m. CET. Please make sure to indicate “application to SHIFT Study Sprint” and your name in the subject line.
  4. You will receive a notification of receipt, regardless of level of completeness.
  5. We will admit on a rolling basis. You will hear latest by February 28th from us. We will issue a document stating your admission into the program. Please note: You will not be enrolled into THI as a student. 

FAQs

Who is eligible to apply?

The program is intended for international students who wish to pursue a Master's degree in Renewable Energy Systems in the following winter semester and seek preparatory measures before beginning their studies.

To be eligible, applicants must:

Hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or natural sciences with at least 210 ECTS (or equivalent). 

Applicants with 180 ECTS may participate under specific conditions by proving they have addressed any competence gaps (e.g., via professional experience or additional academic credits).

Demonstrate English proficiency at a B2 level (Common European Framework of Reference).

Successfully pass the program’s selection process.

How and when can I apply?

Applications are submitted via an online form during the application period.

Start of application period: January 15, 2025

End of application period: February 15, 2025 

Applicants must provide:

    Proof of Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and ECTS credits.

    English proficiency certification (level B2).

    Additional documentation to demonstrate specific experience in energy technology, if applicable.

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status after the selection process concludes. Successful applicants must complete an online registration form and provide valid photo identification.

What if my degree shows deficits in practical or theoretical skills?

No, there is no automatic transfer. Participants must apply separately for the Master's program starting on May 2nd. Completion of the SHIFT Study Sprint will be considered during the application process, and the IWC team will guide applicants through the procedure.

When can I expect admission?

 You will be notified by February 28, 2025, at the latest.

What is the duration and structure of the program?

The SHIFT Study Sprint RES lasts for 15 weeks. The course will begin on March 17, 2025. 

It includes:

-Academic Modules: Core subjects such as Thermodynamics and Electrical Engineering.

-Electives: Participants select one from three topics: Energy Distribution and CHP Plants, Energy Markets and Coupling Sectors, or Energy Storage.

-Language and Intercultural Courses: German language (levels A1 or A2) and intercultural competence training to ease integration.

-Workshops and Skills Training: Topics include scientific working methods, practical life skills, and professional preparation.

Attendance is compulsory for all courses, and participants must not miss more than 25% of any course to qualify for the certificate of participation.

Is there a fee for the SHIFT Study Sprint RES program?

No, there are no direct fees for this preparatory program due to generous funding by the DAAD. Additionally, participants will not be required to pay the service fee for international students from non-EU countries.

Can I postpone joining the course until next year? Will the offer remain valid?

Unfortunately, the offer is only valid for the SHIFT Study Sprint cohort you applied for. You will have to aply again in the coming year if you´d like to defer participation. 

Can credits from the SHIFT Study Sprint RES be transferred to the Master's program in Renewable Energy Systems or applied later?

You will not receive ECTS for the courses, therefore they cannot be transferred. Additionally, the courses you take will be on a Bachelor´s level preparing for Master´s level expertise. 

Are participants automatically transferred to the Master RES after completing the SHIFT Study Sprint RES?

No, there is no automatic transfer. Participants must apply separately for the Master's program starting on May 2nd. Completion of the SHIFT Study Sprint will be considered during the application process, and the IWC team will guide applicants through the procedure.

What kind of support does the program offer?

The program provides:

    Academic preparation through targeted courses and electives.

    Cultural integration through intercultural workshops and language training.

    Practical support for daily life, such as financial planning, health care, housing assistance and navigating public services in Germany.

    Networking opportunities with local companies and institutions.

Events and excursions

Will I receive a certificate upon completion?

Yes, participants who meet attendance requirements (minimum 75%) will receive a certificate of participation.
